Cactus Of The Week: Pencil Cholla

Cholla (choy-YA) is a part of the cactus family (Cactacea) and the genus cylindropuntia (“cylindrical stems”).  There are several species of cholla in the Sonoran Desert. And with that introduction, our first Cacti Of The Week:

Pencil Cholla
Cylindropuntia arbuscula

Grows in a bush like orientation up to about 1 meter tall (some can grow to as large as 2 meters). Pencil cholla has short, narrow stem segments with sparse, but long, spines. The pencil cholla flowers in May-June and produces small fruit.

  1. I love these cacti too, they are all over parts of Texas…well at this species: Cylindropuntia leptocaulis I looked at the one you posted and it is restricted to AZ.

Cacti of the week—a great idea ’cause I do not know my cacti very well at all.

    1. I don’t know much about them either…and if I get an identification wrong, be sure to let me know! I’m not an expert and am trying to do the best job I can with the resources I have!
